Lay's in India

News in an Urdu daily published about the Lay's, an established brand of Pepsico India, using the chips products with the ingredient of E 631 which indicates the product is mixed with the pig fat during the preparation. Since, it is very sensitive issue for more than 160 Million Indian Muslim consumer who are strictly prohibited for pig and it violate also the norms of purely vegetarian community, a mail regarding clarification is sent to the company media manager of Pepsico. Company clarified, Lay's is purely vegetarian and compliant with strict quality manufacturing standards.  PepsiCo India Holdings Pvt. Ltd does NOT use any animal origin material and wishes to assure that all its food products and their ingredients are 100% vegetarian.   The labels of all such products carry the ‘vegetarian’ logo (green dot within a square) as prescribed by the Prevention of Food Adulteration Rules, 1955.   E-631 is a flavor enhancer which is extracted from plant starch and is also in fact Halal.  Frito Lay India do NOT use any animal origin material and wishes to assure that all of our foods products and their ingredients are 100% vegetarian and compliant with strict quality manufacturing standards.

Disodium inosinate (E631) is generally produced from meat or from fish. Therefore, disodium inosinate may not be suitable for vegans and vegetarians, and in most cases not suitable for observant Jews, Muslims and Hindu, depending on the origin of the product. Alternately, it may be produced from tapioca starch without any animal products involved in the production. Extract from plant is used in manufacturing of Lay's as per the statement of Pepsico. 3. The concept of Halal Certification is Bidah or an added innovation in Islamic dietary guidelines. Islamic etchings say eat of the "GOOD" foods and give thanks to God. He has ONLY forbidden you carrion, swine flesh, or meats of animals not slaughtered properly.

    4. Dear HK Progress, to write legal terminologies like "Bidah" either one has to be an approved scholar or one may refer to a legal ruling determined by some approved scholar. But none of them is mentioned in your comment.
